Pearls
In the row of red-faced babies without I.D. tags, her mother
looked for the one that belonged to her
and found her husband’s thick eyebrows, his faraway
stare. The father’s daughter was born.
But a river burrowed, a subterranean architect
carving out her mother’s clenched jaw,
her mother’s mother’s tirades—precise missiles,
released when least expected—and
her mother’s mother’s mother’s resentful
silence. Perfect poisoned pearls, handed
to her, one for each forgotten last name.
